Happy Anniversary Beavercreek!

The Beavercreek area was originally a hunting ground prized by the Shawnee and Miami Indians. In the late 1700's, European Settlers started arriving in the area, mainly along the shores of the Little Beaver and Big Beaver Creeks. Greene County was formed in the early 1800's with the Beavercreek Township as the first county seat. The area began more development in the 1950's with move of many to suburban living. In 1979, a portion of the township was incorporated and became the city of Beavercreek in February 1980.

Imagine being one of the Shawnee Indians like Blue Jacket and returning to see Beavercreek today!

What if we had a time machine and could go forward 200 or 300 years? What would Beavercreek look like? What kind of people would live here? If they were to look back to our time, what would they think about the way we live? Would Beavercreek be a name that is remembered for good or bad? The reputation of any city is based on the conduct of its people.

Have you ever heard of the city of Nineveh? It was the capital of the ancient kingdom and empire of Assyria. In approx. 862 B.C. a man named Jonah was part of an important event that happened in the life of that city. We are told, Now the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me.” (Jonah 1:1-2) The city of Nineveh had sinned against the Lord and he was sending his prophet to deliver a message. Jonah didn’t want to go to Nineveh because of their wickedness; however he changed his mind after spending three days and three nights in the belly

of the whale. Jonah goes to the city and delivers a simple message, “Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.” (Jonah 3:4)

What was the response of the people? “So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them.” (Jonah 3:5)

“And God saw their works that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not.” (Jonah 3:10) The people of Nineveh believed the Lord and repented and the Lord did not send judgment.

Have you ever heard of the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah? We are told, “But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly.” (Genesis 13:13) These people were much like the people of Nineveh. However when these people had a chance to turn from their sin and turn to the Lord, they chose their sin. What was the result? “Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven; And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground.” (Genesis 19:24-25) They suffered the consequences of their sin. “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 6:23)

The Lord holds us accountable for our sins. Do you consider yourself a sinner? Have you sinned against the Lord? Take the “Good Test” below to see how you do.

 The Good Test!

Answer the following four questions honestly:

1. Have you ever told a lie?

If you have told a lie at any time in your life, that makes you a liar and guilty of breaking God’s law (Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour. Exodus 20:16).

2. Have you ever stolen anything (no matter how small in value)?

If you have ever stolen something, regardless of its value, you are a thief and guilty of breaking God’s law (Thou shalt not steal. Exodus 20:15).

3. Have you ever looked at someone and had lustful thoughts?

If you have looked at someone and had lustful thoughts, you are an adulterer at heart and are guilty of breaking God’s law (Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. Matthew 5:27-28)

4. Have you ever used “God,” “Jesus,” or “Christ,” as a curse word?

If you have ever used the name “God,” “Jesus,” or “Christ” as if it were a four-letter filth word to express disgust, you are a blasphemer and guilty of breaking God’s law (Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. Exodus 20:7).

We have only looked at four of the Ten Commandments and if you have broken only these four, by your own admission you are a lying, thieving, blasphemous adulterer at heart. If you were to die this moment and stand before God, would he find you innocent or guilty of breaking His law? You would be found GUILTY! Now that you have been found guilty, justice must prevail.

The lake of fire is the final judgment for those who will suffer the justice of God, unless mercy is granted. Mercy is available! “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)

Jesus Christ suffered the judgment of sin on the cross and died as a sacrifice for our sins. He took our punishment and satisfied the justice of God. “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.”(Ephesians 2:8-9)

Jesus Christ was crucified for our sins, buried and rose again the third day in order that you and I might have hope and have the justice of God satisfied. “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”  (Romans 10:9-10) “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Romans 10:13)

Will you call on him to be your Saviour today? Pray something like this, “Dear God, I’m guilty; please forgive me for sinning against you. I put my faith in Jesus Christ for my eternal salvation. Thank you for dying in my place. In Jesus’ name, Amen.” If you have trusted Christ as your Saviour, you now have eternal life. Please contact us if you have trusted Christ or have further questions.

What if you reject the Lord Jesus Christ as your Saviour? There are several other cities that are mentioned in the scripture. “And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.” (Matthew 11:23-24) Imagine standing in judgment and being told that you will be under greater condemnation than the city of Sodom! If you reject the Lord Jesus Christ as your own personal Saviour, you will see him at the great white throne judgment recorded in Revelation 20:11-15. Verse 15 says, “And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.” Don’t let that be your end!
